The 4th APMCHUD to be held in Amman, Jordan, 10-12 December 2012

The 4th Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) is being held in Amman, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from 10-12 December 2012. The conference will be held in the le Royal Hotel hosted by the H.K. Jordan. The overall theme of the Conference this time is Youth and Information Technology in Sustainable Urban Development. The conference will dwell upon the following five sub-themes:

  1. Youth and IT in Urban Planning and Management
  2. Livelihood Opportunities for Youth
  3. Youth Involvement and use of IT in Water and Sanitation
  4. Opportunity for Financing Youth-led Sustainable Development
  5. Youth as city changer for prosperous cities

APMCHUD is a consultative mechanism, with technical support from UN-Habitat on the promotion of sustainable development of housing and urban development in the Asia-pacific region. It serves as a forum and network to discuss the urban challenges at the continental and regional level as a basis for national, provincial and local level policies and strategies, and as a focus for the discussion on the Habitat Agenda and relevant millennium Development Goals and Targets.
The official opening will be on the morning of the 10th December 2012 in le Royal hotel and the Executive level meeting will be for the two days followed by the High level meeting of the ministers on December 12 , 2012. The ministers meeting will review and endorse the Draft Amman Declaration and Action Plan as the main outcomes of the Conference.

Field trips will be organized for the interested participants during the conference to show several best practices in and around Amman city that demonstrate the importance of people’s participation in urban planning and related areas in achieving sustainable urbanization. An exhibition is also being organised, and the participating countries are encouraged to showcase their programs and achievements in promoting sustainable housing and urbanization.

The Conference plenary sessions, meetings, all Workshops and the exhibition will be convened at Le Royal Hotel located at the heart of Amman at the Third Circle, in the neighborhood of Jabal Amman at the following address:

The Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) was established in the year 2006 with a mission to promote sustainable housing and urban development for human settlements in the Asia-Pacific Region, aiming to consider and address the challenges of housing and urbanization in Asia and the Pacific. Since the establishment four conferences were organized with different themes and produced declarations and action plans to be implemented by the member countries.

The 1st APMCHUD was held in New Delhi, India, from 13-16 December of 2006, with a theme: 'A vision for sustainable urbanization in the Asia-Pacific by 2020'. The conference focused on housing and human settlements issues with an aim to identify strategies to manage urbanization and promote urban research among Asia Pacific countries. Four main sub topics were deliberated in the conference; pro poor urban governance and planning, delivery of MDGs for water and sanitation, slum upgrading and financing sustainable urbanization.

The 2nd APMCHUD was held in Tehran, Islamic Republic of Iran, from 12-14 May of 2008, with a theme: 'Sustainable Urban Development; Associating Growth with Equity and Identity'. The main objectives of the conference were the exchange of viewpoints on policies and strategies of a uniform mechanism for sustainable urban development with a view on the goals of the Millennium Declaration. The Conference also focused on issues such as prevention of expansion of urban residents living in slum while trying to encourage regional and international partnership in support of the poor and fight against urban poverty.

The 3rd APMCHUD was held in Solo, Republic of Indonesia, from 22-24 June 2010, with a theme: 'Empowering Communities for Sustainable Urbanization'. The objective of the conference was to address the challenges of housing and urbanization in Asia and the Pacific.

In support of the theme of the conference, the working groups were divided into 5 groups of discussion that addressed strategic issues in Asia Pacific regions, as follows: Community Participation in Planning and Governance, Participatory Urban Slum Upgrading, Delivery of MDGs for Water and Sanitation, Financing Sustainable Housing and Urban Development, and The Role of Communities in Addressing Climate Change.
