UN-Habitat Executive Director Dr. Joan Clos will from Monday accompany members of the agency's Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) on a working tour to Mozambique.
Activities planned for the one week visit include a meeting with the mayor of Maputo, a Roundtable on Opportunities and Challenges of Urbanization in Mozambique with Dr. Clos and international cooperation partners, donors, government, municipalities, academic sector, private sector and civil society representatives.
Also in the pipeline is a visit to UN-Habitat supported activities in Munhava neighbourhood of Beira City, a meeting with the mayor of Dondo City, who is also the chairman of the National Association of Municipalities in Mozambique as well as a visit to UN-Habitat supported activities in Nhamainga neighbourhood of that city.
Some of the activities UN-Habitat has successfully undertaken in Mozambique include slum upgrading and vulnerability reduction in flood prone cities; formulation of a national slum upgrading strategy; water and sanitation slum upgrading interventions in Maputo, Beira, Dondo and Quelimane and municipal capacity building for participatory budgeting.
Ongoing and upcoming projects include access to affordable housing finance for women; construction of a multi-purpose centre including biogas in Beira; implementation of the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme and achieving sustainable urban development in Nampula-Nacala.
The Executive Director is further expected to reiterate his message of urban risk reduction and cities resilience especially as the visit coincides with the International Day for Disaster Reduction which was marked on Friday.
At the Sixth Session of the World Urban Forum that ended just a month ago in Naples, Italy Dr. Clos held a joint meeting on areas of mutual cooperation with the Head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Margareta Wahlström. |
