Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 25 Jun 12

UN-Habitat and ICLEI on Friday signed an agreement with the city of Suwon in Korea to host the world's first Eco-Mobility Festival.

The five-week festival will present a real-life vision of car-free urban living in the future. It will see a neighborhood in Suwon turn into an eco-mobile neighborhood, with Suwon's residents playing an active role.

"With this festival, we will work together to show what an eco-mobile city looks like and deliver the message that this new urban lifestyle is possible," said Mayor Yeom, Tae-young.

He signed the agreement with UN-Habitat's Executive Director, Dr. Joan Clos, and Mr. Konrad Ootto Zimmermann, Secretary General, ICLEI, also known as Local Governments for Sustainability. Mr. Jae-Joon Lee, the Vice Mayor of Suwon and Mr. David Cadman, President of ICLEI also attended the signing ceremony.

The Suwon agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Rio +20 sustainable development summit attended by more than 100 Heads of State and government, along with thousands of representatives from non-governmental organizations, the private sector and civil society, all seeking to help shape new policies to promote global prosperity, reduce poverty and advance social equity and environmental protection.

In his remarks at the closing ceremony, the UN Secretary-General Ban ki-moon said he was also encouraged by the fact that more than 700 concrete commitments, such as the Suwon festival, had been registered at the conference from governments, business, industry, financial institutions and civil society among other groups.
