Eight African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries have been selected to join the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme, bringing the total number of participating countries to 37. Benin, Botswana, Lesotho, Rwanda, and Togo from Africa were selected, along with St. Lucia from the Caribbean and Tuvalu and Vanuatu from the Pacific.

In the detailed selection process, countries must clearly demonstrate interest in the programme, the need for technical assistance to address urban poverty and urbanization, and resource mobilization opportunities at the county level. A decentralization process, empowerment for local governments, and a human rights approach are also part of the selection criteria.

The Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme provides a platform for mainstreaming urban development and slum-upgrading priorities at global, regional, national, and city levels. Opportunities for changing the living conditions of slum dwellers through capacity-building and investment programmes are also provided.

The European Commission has provided funding for the implementation of activities, while the Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Secretariat is a key partner facilitating linkages with regional and national agencies.
