Juba, 3 Oct 11
The World Habitat Day celebrations in Juba on 3 October 2011 kicked off with a 2 kilometer procession starting from the Ministry of Housing & Physical Planning offices to Hai Zandia informal settlement in Buluk area. The procession was led by the minister Mrs. Jemma Nunu Kumba, senior officials of the ministry and UN-HABITAT staff and consultants. The procession was joined by tens of staff from the ministry, youth from the Hai Zandia community as well as invited participants from other public institutions and international partners. The procession went through city streets singing a hastily composed chant "Freedom, freedom, freedom for South Sudan; Housing, housing, housing for all; Clean environment, clean environment, clean environment for all".

At the Hai Zandia settlement, participants were taken through a demonstration of stabilised soil block (SSB) production by community youth. The technical aspects of the SSB technology were explained to the participants by Mr. Jackson Roberts, a UN-HABITATconsultant architect.

The demonstration was followed by speeches from representatives of UN-Habitat and the Hai Zandia community. The key note speech was read by Mrs. Kumba who was the chief guest.
