Illegal - irregular - clandestine - uncontrolled - slum - skid row - favela - barrio - bidonville - shantytown. Our common vocabulary for nonformal urbanism emphasizes its outcast nature, but not its magnitude, dynamism and legitimacy. Today a new generation of designers engages the conflicted and large territory of self made cities through carefully calibrated infrastructure and landscape interventions. Metropolis Nonformal traces their particular modes of operation in an emerging field that is crucial for the future of global design practice.
