Mongolia is a developing country that transformed into a market economy in 1990, with increased importation of consumer goods.  Population growth and increased consumption has resulted in increased volume of waste – currently 43.2 million tons of waste annually, 30-40 percent being plastics.

Darkhan waste site is located 7 km from the city. Plastic bags are dispersed over more than 150 hectares, affecting plants and livestock. Darkhan city has a population of 70,000, with high unemployment. 60-70% of the unemployed are homeless women. Waste collection is usually done by the poor, including children, who re-sell plastic and glass.

The Plastic Bag Partnership, established by a local entrepreneur, collaborates with ove 30 individuals and has over 100 private sector customers. The company produces covers for plumbing wells, fences, posts, chairs, benches, railway parts and over 50 environment friendly products. These products substitute wood and iron and have 50-100 year guarantees.

Results: 30-40% reduction in air pollution; 7.392 hectare of land cleared of plastic waste and greened; 15-21 % reduction in wood use; incomes generated for 2000 families; and increased national awareness on waste reduction and recycling.
