The “integrated village” managed by APROCOBU is an experimental site for integrated development, which seeks to address the challenges of repatriation of refugees, reconciliation, integration and demobilization in post-war Burundi. Located about 200km from the capital city Bujumbura, the social context is dominated by visible and/or latent tension caused by overpopulation, overexploited land, lack of water and electricity in rural areas, disease vectors, lack of equal access to education for boys and girls, access to healthcare and security management. The goals and strategies of the initiative are aimed at improving the lifestyle of rural populations through access to water, electricity, and income-generating activities.
On land provided by the provincial administration, the integrated village transforms the rural slums of displaced ethnic minorities and creates a multi-ethnic village incorporating a diverse population representing displaced ethnic minorities, demobilized and landless people. The initiative represents an attempt to encourage deep exchange and commitment to finding solutions to difficult problems in a post-war environment.
