UN-HABITAT’s Global Urban Observatory monitors global progress in implementing the Habitat Agenda and to monitor the global urban conditions and trends. The programme addresses the urgent need to improve the world-wide base of urban knowledge by supporting Governments, local authorities and organizations of the civil society develop and apply policy-oriented urban indicators, statistics and other urban information.
The programme coordinates the monitoring of the Habitat Agenda and the Millennium Development Goals and activities pertaining to the production of reliable and up-to-date urban indicators at regional, country and city levels. The Global Urban Observatory assists the Agency in the effort to become, by 2013 a premier reference centre for data collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting on sustainable urbanization.
The activities of GUO fall under two main areas: Global Monitoring, and Development Impact Assessment.
